How I Do My Gel-X Nails at Home

Doing my nails at home has become one of my favorite little forms of self-care.

As much as I love getting my nails done professionally, regular salon appointments don’t always fit into my schedule. Learning how to do Gel-X nails at home has saved me time, saved me money, and given me a creative outlet that I genuinely enjoy.

While I’m definitely not a professional nail technician, this is the simple routine I use to get long-lasting Gel-X nails at home using mostly Apres and Mia Secret products.

Why I Started Doing My Nails at Home

As a busy mom, I found myself constantly trying to squeeze nail appointments into an already packed schedule.

Doing my nails at home means:

  • No appointments
  • No waiting
  • No childcare planning
  • More flexibility
  • Significant cost savings

Plus, there’s something really satisfying about sitting down with a coffee and doing my own nails during a quiet moment at home.

My Simple Gel-X Nail Routine

Step 1: Prep the Nails

I start by:

  • Removing any old product
  • Pushing back my cuticles
  • Lightly buffing the natural nail
  • Applying Mia Secret Nail Prep
  • Applying Mia Secret Primer

Proper prep is the biggest factor in helping my sets last.

Step 2: Apply a Thin Layer of Extend Gel

Before applying my tips, I apply a thin layer of Apres Extend Gel to my natural nails and cure it under my lamp.

This creates a strong foundation for the Gel-X application.

Step 3: Prep the Gel-X Tips

After sizing my tips, I apply primer to the inside of each Gel-X tip.

This helps create a stronger bond and improves retention.

Step 4: Apply the Gel-X Tips

I add Extend Gel to the inside of the tip, carefully apply it to the nail, and do a quick cure to hold everything in place.

I repeat this process until all of the tips have been applied.

Once every tip is secured, I cure each hand under my full-size lamp to fully set the Gel-X application before moving on to shaping and color.

Step 5: Shape and Refine

Once everything is fully cured, I shape and refine the nails to my desired length and style.

Step 6: Apply Base Coat & Color

Step 7: Apply Top Coat

I finish everything with a glossy top coat and cure one final time.

How Long My Gel-X Nails Last

When I take my time with prep, my Gel-X sets typically last around 2–3 weeks before I remove them and start fresh.

For me, proper prep makes the biggest difference in preventing lifting.

My Favorite Part

For me, doing my nails at home isn’t just about saving money.

It’s one of those small things that helps me feel put together, even during busy weeks.

A fresh coffee, a new set of nails, and quiet time to myself can completely change the way I start the week.
