Every year at the end of each season, I clean out my closet from the past season to prepare for the upcoming one. I have been doing this since I was a kid (like 11 or 12 i think lol) and I have it pretty streamlined now. Most times, the whole process only takes a few hours but it can take longer depending on how many breaks I take. As summer comes to a close, it is time to start transitioning my closet from the light and airy summer pieces that I love to my fall staples and I thought I’d share with you guys how I clean my closet out to get ready for fall.
Step #1: I look through my closet and start pulling items out. I have my closet color coded so I move from one section to the next randomly picking out the things that I’ve only worn once, the things that I never worn, things that have too much wear and tear, or the things that just didn’t fit quite right. I place these things in a pile on the floor until I am done sorting my entire closet. This part goes by pretty fast because I am pretty much just pulling items out without really looking at what I am putting into the pile.
Step #2: I re-sort through the pile of clothing on the floor to make sure I didn’t throw anything out that I actually want to keep. I do this because in step one, I am just pulling things out of my closet without REALLY looking at them and this gives me a chance to examine what I am about to get rid of. This step is the hardest part for me because (as my husband says) I form an emotional attachment with every piece of clothing that I buy! (lol!) Honestly, it’s embarrassing but it is sooooo true.
Step #3: This step has changed quite a bit over the years. Once I have my pile of things that I am absolutely NOT keeping (lol!), I decide what I am going to do with them. At this point, this is usually where I break out the iron and begin ironing everything so that I can sell it at Plato’s. With the money that I get from selling my clothes, I usually purchase items for the season we are transitioning to. So this time around, I will be selling clothes and then buying new items for fall/winter. Selling my clothes is something that started closer to my adulthood. As a kid, I would give my clothes away to my cousins or friends. I also sort another pile of things that I want my mom to look through to see if she wants to keep anything. My mom LOVES when I clean my closet out because most of clothes are gently worn so it’s like getting brand new clothes.
And that’s pretty much it! I hope you guys enjoyed today’s post!
