As we approach the official start of fall, I have been spending some time getting my apartment fall ready. Unfortunately, I am still adding some finishing touches to my apartment so I can’t do an entire apartment post just yet but I can show you guys how I make my flower arrangements for fall. Making the flower arrangements is my favorite part of decorating for any time of year. To me, the flower arrangements can really make a room so I like to take my time picking out the right flowers and arranging them. I usually buy my vases and containers from hobby lobby when they have 50% off on glass items. When the glass is 50% off you can get a really nice vase for dirt cheap. If glass isn’t on sale, you can always use the 40% coupon that is on the hobby lobby website for a single item.
1. I like to start with one flower that is the accent color of my theme. In this case, my color scheme centered around the color orange so I chose to start with an orange sunflower and build around that.
2. After I chose my starter flower I started to sort of mix and match different colors and different types of flowers to make my bouquet. Even though my accent color is orange, I knew I wanted my bouquet to have a fall feel so I started to add in different shades of yellow, red, and ivory. While I am mixing and matching the flowers, I like to arrange them in my hand so I can see how the flowers work together. In the past I have purchased my flowers from hobby lobby but this time around I purchased my flowers from Michael’s. I like the flower stems here way more than the ones in hobby lobby for a few reasons: #1 They are cheaper and #2 I like the quality of the Michael’s flowers better. (For each bouquet I make, I like to use no less than 6 flowers so my bouquet is full.)
3. After I have played around with the different combinations and have a bouquet that I like (I make my purchase) go home a cut my flowers. Now this is the tricky part! The key is to cut the stem little by little so that you do not cut the stem too short. As I cut my flowers to a length that I like, I place them into the vase and arrange them as I go. I like to do this because I can create the look I want as I go instead of trying to do it all at the end. In the past, when I cut all the flowers and then try to arrange them at the end, I get a little overwhelmed because it just seems like a lot to accomplish when all the flowers are laid out on the floor mixed in with the stem scraps lol!
